羽黒とわらじB

Haguro Shrine sits atop Mt. Haguro which lies in the center of Mt. Shinobu. The final ascent to the shrine is climb up a rocky path, so please watch your step. The shrine is home to the largest ‘waraji’ straw sandal in Japan.
A long time ago a large ‘Nio’ shrine guardian stood at the entrance to the shrine, and the sandal was made for his feet. The Mt. Shinobu Dawn Procession is held every year in early February. During the parade the massive ‘waraji’ is carried through the city center before being brought up Mt. Shinobu to the shrine. The sandal is 12 meters long, weights around 2 tons, and requires around 100 people to carry it.
The Waraji Matsuri is also held in early August when the city center is filled with dancing and summer festival fun.
