Known as ‘Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi’ in Japanese, the Mt. Shinobu Dawn Procession is held at Fukushima City’s symbolic Mt. Shinobu. The 300-year-old event involves nearly 100 participants who carry a 12-meter, 2-ton waraji (traditional Japanese sandal made of straw) around town. The procession finishes at Haguro Shrine, where the waraji is dedicated to the god that resides within. The participants are clad in white happi coats and hachimaki headbands as they haul the waraji around town in one unified stride.
