Mochi Making

Mochi are traditional Japanese cakes made by pounding steamed rice with a wooden mallet until the grains have the consistency of smooth thick paste. Mochi have been eaten in Japan for ages, most especially during the New Year holiday and other days of celebration. At present, most mochi are made using machines, but visitors to Fukushima City Minka-en can experience making mochi the traditional way: with a large wooden mallet and mortar. Come experience the past, and let’s eat!
